Educational Technology in Teacher Preparation Challenge

The 2017 National Educational Technology Plan calls for reflection and action on how educators prepare our nation’s pre-service educators with the goal of ensuring every new teacher is prepared to meaningfully use technology to support student learning. A group of innovators across multiple sectors within the education field participated in a summit in June 2016. In an effort led by the United States Department of Education (ED), the event culminated in the creation of four guiding principles for the use of educational technology in teacher preparation:

  1. Focus on the active use of technology to enable learning and teaching through creation, production, and problem solving.
  2. Build sustainable, program-wide systems of professional learning for higher education instructors to strengthen and continually refresh their capacity to use technological tools to enable transformative learning and teaching.
  3. Ensure pre-service teachers’ experiences with educational technology are program-deep and program-wide rather than one-off courses separate from their methods courses.
  4. Align efforts with research-based standards, frameworks, and credentials recognized across the field.

Since the summit, stakeholders across the teacher preparation field have made strides to better support our pre-service teachers by giving them the skills necessary to meaningfully use technology in their classrooms and support student learning on their first day as an in-service educator.

Summit attendees came together in four working groups to identify ways to advance the four guiding principles:

  1. Active Use of Technology
  2. Program-Deep and System-Wide
  3. Research-Based Competencies and Credentials
    • Teacher Educator Technology Competencies (TETCs)– The Teacher Educator Technology Competencies (TETCs) were developed to support the redesign of teaching in teacher education programs so that ALL teacher educators are prepared to model and integrate technology in their teaching.
  4. Sustainable Systems of Professional Development for Higher Education Faculty
